England legend Jack Charlton has been rushed to hospital after falling down the stairs at his Northumberland home.

The former Leeds defender, now 76 years old, suffered head injuries and had to drag himself to the phone to get help, as he was alone in the house.

However, Charlton’s son John has reassured that despite an operation most likely being needed, his father is feeling better.

“The stairs in his house are a bit tricky and awkward and he basically fell down them,” The Daily Mail reports.

“It could have been a lot worse because my mum was out of the house and he was on his own. Because of his age they want to operate on him, give him a new hip. We’ve all been worrying but he’s going to be fine.

“The doctors say he’ll be back on his feet within 24 hours of the operation and should be home next week.

“He’s in good spirits considering what happened. He’s sitting up in bed cracking jokes with the nurses,” John concluded.

The 1966 World Cup winner made 773 appearances for Leeds during his playing career.
