Tottenham may be preparing a shock move for free agent Carlton Cole, according to The Metro.

The striker who has been released by West Ham this summer, hit a brace in a behind-closed-doors friendly for Andre Villas-Boas’ side.

Rumours on social networking site Twitter have been awash with a shock move for the 29-year-old, after reportedly linking up with Roberto Soldado in a friendly against non-league Enfield Town at the club’s training ground earlier this week.

It is unclear whether Cole featured merely in a bid to maintain his fitness in the hope a top flight club come in for him before the close of the transfer window, or whether Andre Villas-Boas has a genuine interest in signing the striker.

Newly promoted Crystal Palace have been linked with a move for the former Chelsea striker, although any talk of a potential deal seems to have died down.

Tottenham could yet be in the market for a new striker, despite recently landing Soldado for a club record fee of £26million.

Clint Dempsey has recently been sold to Seattle Sounders, while the futures of Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe remain up the air.
